Thanks for being available to answer questions. I have had a pond for three years and enjoy it to no end. This year my snails have been leaving the pond and committing hari kari on the lawn. Is there any logical reason for this mass suicide? please write back. thanks

Sue,

Two thoughts on the apple snails. High ammonia or nitrite levels might drive them out. If you have recently added any fish medications they are sometimes toxic to snails.

Apple snails lay their eggs about 1inch above the water level. They may just be looking for higher ground. Apple snails do a very good job at eating all of the plants in the pond and leaving the algae alone. This may have been a blessing in disguise.

Thanks and I hope that this was helpful.
