12/2/99 Question: Hi Folks, WE have just transferred our fish from a small tub into a larger tub ( 900mmx600mm) we also put in water lily after a week or two the water lily developed a slim on its leaves turned to a dark brown and when you touch it falls apart. The duck weed that grew in the other pot also has died off, its extremely hot at the present, but it seems that the plants are having a bad time. We also have a water Iris which finished flowering in the old pot but the base of the long leaves are loosing color and falling over at first we thought the fish were eating them. Do you have any suggestions as we do not want to loose the fish. Any thoughts much appreciated thanks Trevor & Jane Answer: Trevor & Jane, I would first remove the organic matter from the water (i.e.. old lily leaves, dead or decaying matter). By doing this will reduce the amount of ammonia that will enter the system. The fish do not need the ammonia or nitrites that will follow. The plants may be going dormant for the winter. What climate are you in? Have you brought the plants in from outside? Any new fertilizers added?? Did you add a dechlorinator? If you can give me a little more info I am certain we can help. Thanks and I hope that this was helpful. Scott Bates Grass Roots Nursery |
