Q:
I have 2 (200 gallon) ponds. I installed a 1/2 hp Hayward Pool pump and also installed a pool filter. Will this type of filter work? Pls. advise.I have, by the way, 7 Butterfly Kois in one, and 11 Tilapias in the other. Ponds are joined by a waterfalls. Kois in the upper pond and Tilapias in the lower.

Pls. comment.

Thank you!

JOE,

Generally swimming pool filters are good at removing solid waste materials, i.e. fish waste, leaves, sediment, and some algae. They do not address the ammonia, nitrite, or nitrates. The ammonia and the nitrite can stress or kill fish. I would recommend using a biological filter and a good bacterial culture like Bacto Pur Klear to keep the nasties down below safe levels. If you are not currently using a bacterial culture I would recommend testing the water regularly.

I hope that this was helpful
