5/26/99QUESTION: Dear Sir We have had a water garden here in Mesa AZ. for a number of years. This spring when the new lilly leaves were up I noticed some black and white residue on the leaves. On further inspection it is some kind of very small bug and looks like someone spilled pepper on all the leaves. I have tried spraying water at them and knocking them off, but they manage to get right back on. I have also washed them off by hand with no better results. Can you help me? Thanks Terry Dyer ANSWER: Terry, It sounds to me like you a having a little trouble with aphids. Try using Blade Runner. It is a form of diatomaceous earth that is safe to use in the pond if you follow the directions. It just cuts the little devils and they dry up. Generally you need to make a few applications between hatches. Thanks and I hope that this was helpful Scott Bates 8/8/99Question: Thank very much. Answer: Blade runner works well on aphids. You can use it dry or add a small amount to water and spray it on the plants. This will cut the aphids and kills them as they dry up. Or you can knock them off with a spray off water a few times until the fish eat them. I hope that this was helpful. Scott Bates |
